Intro to Applied Research

“Applied Research” is generally considered to be the application of knowledge, focused on the resolution of a problem or need specific to an organization (external business or other organization within the community) with the objective of delivering a resolution or result. Applied research is collaborative, usually with project ideas coming directly from the external partner. This is distinct from the discovery research associated with universities. In colleges, the focus is more on the “how” and “what” rather than the “why”. Applied research requires a committed external partner with a specific problem or challenge, who is willing to contribute (either in cash or through the provision of equipment, supplies, staff time, etc.) towards the project.

Guided by an understanding that research is an intentional, process-driven activity that must adhere to generally accepted standards for rigor and integrity, applied research at Fleming College engages our faculty, staff, students, and community in innovation to enhance student learning and community economic development.

Applied research is project-based, addressing a specific external business or industry problem, an identified community need, or a global issue.  In general, applied research projects:

  • Design, develop, test or improve products and services; or
  • Add to our understanding and knowledge of individuals, groups and societies; or
  • Prototype and test a new technology; or
  • Lead to the commercialization of innovative technologies.

These collaborative projects can be carried out in three different forms:

  1. Grant-based (cost of the project is mainly covered by a research grant)
  2. Contract or fee-for-service (cost of the project is solely covered by the external partner)
  3. By students as part of their coursework (labour cost of the project covered by student classwork)

Depending on the external partner’s preference, the size and type of the project, and funding options available, one of these types is selected to support the project.
