Travelling with electronic devices can be costly in terms of roaming charges, and poses a security risk to the device, information stored and transmitted by the device, and your login account/credentials.
Below are some rules and guidelines to follow when travelling abroad:
As a holder of a Fleming College mobile device, it is your responsibility to provide adequate advanced notice to the College’s ITS Department when travelling outside of Canada with your Fleming mobile device.
Personal/Vacation Travel
Leave work devices at home when travelling for personal reasons. You can only take a college device with you on personal travel if your supervisor confirms in writing you are required to be accessible/available during personal travel dates. Otherwise, you are responsible for the cost of roaming charges incurred by a Fleming device that you take on personal travel trips.
Work Travel
You can only take a college device with you on work travel if your supervisor confirms it is necessary to do so.
When Travelling with your work devices:
- Only use trusted & secure WiFi Hotspot services such as the one at your hotel. The concierge can confirm the connection details for you. Avoid the use of all other hotspots as unknown networks are often insecure and can intercept your computer traffic/communication for malicious purposes.
- Limit of use of mobile/cellular data as much as possible as typical roaming plans only include a small amount of mobile data at a high cost. Limit the use of mobile apps, especially those with multimedia. If you need to use the maps/GPS function, download the map areas of interest in advance using WiFi.
- Never used a shared or public computer.
- Turn off Bluetooth to prevent any unwanted device connection attempts.
- Ensure that your operating system and antivirus products are up to date.
- Ensure that your device is password protected and encrypted.
- Backup the files on your device before travelling. Remove any sensitive data from the device in the event it is lost or stolen.
- Always keep your devices with you. Store them in an in-room safe if you need to leave them unattended.
