Human Participants

All research projects undertaken by Fleming students or staff that involves human participants falls within the jurisdiction of the Research Ethics Board (REB). Off-campus research carried out by Fleming students or staff also applies. Before any research that involves human participants can take place, the proposal for research must undergo a review and approval process by the REB to ensure that the research complies with the highest ethical standards.

The review and approval process confirms that human subjects and study volunteers are protected, treated with dignity, and with minimal harm or risk.

For more about the REB process, see the Research Ethics Board.

There are exemptions. Fleming’s 2-216 Policy for Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans policy document outlines these exemptions.

If you are not sure if you need REB approval for your study, please contact the Office of Applied Research and Innovation at REB@flemingcollege.ca.
