Fleming programs feature faculty with years of experience, which gives students the opportunity to learn from their knowledge and skills. With her extensive education, faculty member Susan Hyndman is no exception.

“I have a passion for learning and education,” said Susan. “While completing my PhD in Molecular Biology and Genetics from the University of Guelph, I discovered that I enjoy making seemingly abstract scientific concepts and research accessible to both scientists and non-scientists. This prompted me to complete my B.Ed. at the University of Toronto, followed by teaching science and mathematics in secondary school, college and university environments. After over a decade of teaching, I am still excited about investigating these subjects with students.”

Susan is the program coordinator of Fleming’s General Arts and Science – College Health Science program, which is an Ontario College Certificate designed to help students earn prerequisites needed for admission to college health science programs. Students of this program include those who have graduated secondary school but are missing prerequisite courses needed to be considered for admission and students wanting to improve their academics and study skills before starting a college science related program.

“A rather unique program feature is the laboratory focus of our science courses.  Students enjoy the opportunity to apply the material they are studying each week in a hands-on, applied environment.” says Susan.

“As faculty, our most memorable moments are when graduates contact us to say they learned a great deal academically and about themselves as individuals, and are enjoying success in subsequent programs and careers,” said Susan. “I enjoy seeing students who are uncertain about their academic abilities embrace the challenges of this program and reach their academic and vocational goals with confidence.”
