You can’t be everything to everyone! This is very true for Mentors. Understanding your scope of practice and how, and when, to refer your Mentees is critical for successful and effective Mentorship!

When To Refer?
- LISTEN CAREFULLY– when the student’s concern is beyond your knowledge, greater than you wish to handle, or in need of professional attention, it is time to refer!
- KNOW YOUR LIMITS – When in doubt, refer the mentee to a more qualified resource.
- SEEK CONSULTATION – Sometimes it may be more appropriate for a mentor to seek consultation with a knowledgeable resource person to find out options for the student being helped. First you must inform the student that you would like to consult with someone else about their situation. By clarifying what you are seeking from a consultation and getting the students consent, you are enabling the student to be informed and in control of the process.
How To Refer?
- BE UPFRONT – Explain why you feel it is desirable or necessary to make a referral.
- BE KNOWLEDGEABLE – Do your homework to ensure you can accurately describe services that can be obtained from the resource or person you are recommending.
- EMPOWER – Allow the mentee to assume responsibility and control in making a contact or appointment.
- PERSONALIZE – If possible, give the mentee the name of a particular person or persons who can be a direct contact at the resource organization.
- PREPARE – Assist your mentee in formulating questions to ask or approaches to take. Some rehearsal or preparation can be reassuring.
- FOLLOW UP – Get back in touch with the mentee after visiting the recommended resource to show your concern and interest and to make sure they have contacted the resources.
