Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions Pertaining to Academic Appeals

How soon may a student begin the academic appeal process? After receiving a final grade in the course, as released by the Registrar’s Office, or upon receipt of a breach of academic integrity which results in an immediate final grade of 0. Grounds for appeal can be reviewed here: https://department.flemingcollege.ca/academic-appeals/grounds-for-academic-appeal-faqs/
Students have 10 College business days (days that the College is open) to submit their appeal to faculty form (with supporting documentation).
How do students appeal a breach of academic integrity? A breach of academic integrity falls under the grounds appeal criteria ‘Merit of Work’.  For an academic integrity sanction that results in a grade of 0, the appeal process can begin as soon as the decision is received by the student (from the faculty), pending they have sufficient grounds for appeal.
Do students need to include supporting documentation with their appeal?             Yes, supporting documentation is required to substantiate the grounds for appeal. Please refer to the grounds for appeal for suggested supporting documentation. Link here: https://department.flemingcollege.ca/academic-appeals/grounds-for-academic-appeal-faqs/
What if a student would like their grade “bumped” (i.e. from a 49% to a 50%), does this meet grounds for appeal?                          Yes and no, see below…
1) Yes, if the student can demonstrate grounds for appeal, provide supporting documentation to substantiate the grounds, and they can demonstrate that they have met the learning outcomes of the course.
2) No, if the student can not substantiate; requesting that a grade be changed/bumped without grounds is not appealable.
How would a student appeal a mark in a specific assignment that they think they should have received a higher grade on?           It is always best to communicate concerns and request clarity from faculty before the end of the semester. To formally appeal, student’s must wait until the final grades are released by the Registrar’s Office and then appeal their final mark using ‘Merit of Work’ as their grounds for appeal and the assignment as their supporting documentation.
How does a student appeal an academic progression decision?                          They may appeal this decision directly to the office of the Dean of their School of study, bypassing the appeal to faculty level.
How does a student appeal a PLAR decision?                           An appeal of a PLAR decision does not fall under the academic appeal policy; details can be found in the operating procedure “2-221 Recognition of Academic Excellence.”
What is a “College business day”? College business days include days that the College is open. This excludes holidays and scheduled College closures.
