“As a student I was always nervous about getting up in front of others to present. With the Emerging Student Leaders Program I was able to get out of my comfort zone and become comfortable presenting in front of my peers”- Emily Scott, Business Administration- Marketing Student
Join the Emerging Student Leaders Program to:
- Grow your leadership skills
- Improve your self-confidence
- Evolve your perspective=
In order to apply to participate in the Emerging Student Leaders Program, you must first submit an application. You will then receive an email from the team confirming your workshop acceptance status and details; you will not necessarily be attending every workshop session that you apply for, seating in each session is limited.
This program is in high demand, so please review the dates and sessions descriptions to ensure you can commit to the workshops before applying.
All communication will be sent to your Fleming email address.
Participants will engage in improv activities to get you know each other and become more comfortable speaking in large groups. Participants will then move to activities that will teach more formal presentation techniques to improve presentation skills and build confidence with speaking in public.
Participants will learn about communication styles and how perception is not the same as intention when presenting ideas to others. Participants will be guided through various conflict resolution styles and the importance of understanding/using these skills appropriately. Through small team scenario learning, participants will have an opportunity to implement the skills that they have learned.
Participants will learn how to deliver a strong personal introduction and be able to confidently answer the most common interview question, “Tell me about yourself”. Using the Co-Curricular Record as a guide to direct the session, participants will begin the process of consciously evaluating and identifying their personal skill set and how to confidently present themselves to others in a leadership role.
Studies have found that diverse teams can lead to improved and more accurate group thinking. In this session, we will focus on learning how to “flip our cultural lens”, complete team challenges/activities and while reflecting on what makes a good team member.
The KAIROS Blanket Exercise is an interactive learning experience that teaches the history of the Indigenous rights we’re rarely taught. Developed in response to the 1996 Report of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples—which recommended education on Canadian-Indigenous history as one of the key steps to reconciliation, the Blanket Exercise covers over 500 years of history.
Participants will have an opportunity to collaborate with each other to present ideas to Fleming student services staff which will help guide future programming on campus. Participants will learn the value of learning from each other and how active participation in mentorship roles promote personal and professional growth opportunities.
Participants will receive information about sexual violence statistics and myths to better understand how the continuum of sexual violence is a societal issue. Â Participants will also become informed on how to be a good support person during and after a disclosure of sexual assault or sexual violence.
Shifting OUTlook participants learned about LGBTQ terms and stereotypes that helped build competencies in understanding and acting against homophobia, on campus and in the community.
