  • What is a Student Governor? A Student Governor is an elected member of the Board of Governors at an Ontario public college. They represent the interests of the student body, participating in governance decisions that impact the college’s strategic direction, financial oversight, and policy development.
  • What is the Board of Governors? The Board of Governors is the highest decision-making body at an Ontario public college. It is responsible for setting the college’s strategic plan, approving its budget, and overseeing major policies. The board includes internal members (such as students and employees) and external members from the community.
  • Who can be a student nominator? A student nominator must be a student enrolled full-time or part-time in a course of program of instruction at Fleming College. A nominator may nominate more than one nominee however, a nominator is not eligible to nominate themselves.
  • What legislation governs the role of a Student Governor? The Student Governor position is governed by the Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology Act, 2002. This Act outlines the structure and responsibilities of a college’s Board of Governors and ensures that student representation is part of the governance framework.
  • How can a Student Governor make an impact? A Student Governor plays a crucial role in providing a student voice at the highest level of college decision-making. Student Governors help shape the policies and future of their institution.
  • How are Student Governors selected? Student Governors are elected by their peers through an election process managed by the college.
  • How long is the term for a Student Governor? The elected Student shall serve a one-year term; however, if the elected Student graduates prior to the expiration of the student’s term, the elected Student may remain a Governor until August 31 in the year of their graduation.
  • Will the Student Governor be eligible for re-election? The elected Student is eligible for re-election for one successive term only; however, following two years’ continuous absence from the Board, a student is eligible for re-election.
  • When does the term start? The Student Governor will take office on the first day of September following the date of their election, September 1, 2025.
  • What if the student graduates before the end of the 2025-26 term? Should the elected student graduate prior to the expiration of their term, they may remain as a Governor until August 31, 2026, following their graduation.
  • Are there any training or development opportunities for Student Governors?  Colleges Ontario, the advocacy organization representing Ontario’s public colleges, provides resources and professional development opportunities for governors, including Student Governors. This includes orientation programs and ongoing support to help them fulfill their governance responsibilities.
