LRC Elevator Retrofit

The LRC elevator will be out of service from May 11 to August 17, 2026

Project Overview

The Sutherland Campus LRC elevator is a critical connection point within the building, providing access across five floor levels and linking key service areas throughout the main campus facility. Located in C Wing, the elevator serves as the primary accessible connection between the A & B Wings and the C & D Wings. Major areas impacted by elevator service disruptions include access from the Main Entrance to Student Experience, the Student Administrative Council (SAC), Food Services, the Kawartha Trades & Technology Centre (KTTC), and Lecture Theatre C2125, among many other academic and support spaces.

In addition to serving as a passenger elevator, the unit also functions as a service elevator supporting the transportation of materials and operational activities throughout the building.

For an extended period, the elevator has experienced recurring operational and reliability issues resulting in frequent service disruptions. These interruptions have negatively impacted students, staff, visitors, and the College services that depend on the safe and efficient movement of people and materials throughout the facility.

What is Happening?

To address these ongoing challenges, a full elevator modernization project will be undertaken. This work will:

  • Significantly reduce the frequency of service failures.
  • Improve overall system reliability and serviceability.
  • Reduce operational downtime.
  • Deliver energy and sustainability efficiencies.
  • Ensure compliance with current code requirements and accessibility standards.

This upgrade is necessary to support the safe, reliable, and long-term operation of this highly utilized and critical building system.

What Can I Expect?

The LRC elevator will be out of service from May 11 to August 17, 2026

During this period:

  • Lower C2, Upper C1, and C0 levels will be accessible by stairs only.
  • Elevator users should plan alternate travel routes and additional travel time within the facility.

We recognize the significant impact this closure may have on students, staff, and visitors, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as this important upgrade is completed. The project has been scheduled during the summer semester to help minimize disruption as much as possible.
