Download: Tips for Being Successful with NARs
Missed Deadline
I am not able to meet my deadline, what happens now? While we cannot guarantee you a placement seat if you are not NARs compliant by your deadline, if we are able to place you once you have a pass or conditional pass, we will do so. Please note that we do have obligations to provide notice to our placement sites of what students will be starting in advance, so we cannot make any promises that you can start placement if you do not meet all non-academic requirements by your deadline.
When you obtain a pass or conditional pass, you can notify NARs@flemingcollege.ca. NARs will confirm your status for your program coordinator and options will be reviewed at that time and you will be contacted by your program coordinator.
CPR Training Expiry Date
My CPR certificate shows that my CPR is valid for 3 years from the date of my training; why am I being told that it expired after one or two years? Please check your program specific NARs and review the validity of the CPR requirement. Some programs require CPR to be renewed annually or every two years.
Vulnerable Sector Check
What if I don’t receive my vulnerable sector check before my deadline, or before my previous VSC expires? There is no alternative to providing a completed and valid VSC for your NARS. Offence declaration forms and receipts are NOT accepted by placement sites and will not be accepted by Synergy in lieu of your VSC.
If you have applied for your VSC but you have not yet received it and your NARs deadline is approaching, please upload all other NARs to Synergy and book an ERV. When you receive your VSC, you will need to upload it to Synergy and book a follow-up ERV. Once you have a pass or conditional pass, please reach out to your program coordinator to inquire about your options for placement.
How early should I apply for my VSC? Students are encouraged to apply for their VSCs early to avoid receiving them late. While VSC processing times may not be within the control of students, applying early is within their control. Please check the detachment locator to ensure that you apply with the correct police service. You can contact your police service directly to ask about the average processing time. If you are quoted a 4-week turnaround, you are encouraged to apply at least 6 weeks before you need to receive your VSC. Leaving a buffer period gives you the best chance of receiving your VSC on time.
- The average processing time for the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is at least 9 weeks. If you live in OPP jurisdiction, you are strongly encouraged to apply at least 10-12 weeks before you require your VSC.
- The average processing time for the Toronto Police Service is at least 8 weeks. If you live in Toronto Police Service jurisdiction, you are strongly encouraged to apply at least 8-10 weeks before you require your VSC.
Conditional Passes
What if I have to take multiple vaccinations and I cannot finish them all before my deadline? If you have had the first dose of any multi-dose vaccination series (Hep B, MMR, Varicella or Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio/Pertussis), and you are in the waiting period between doses, you would qualify for a conditional pass (provided all other NARs meet the requirements). Your immunization form must include proof of your first vaccination, and any bloodwork that you may have done must also be provided to Synergy.
As you receive each additional vaccination, please upload proof of vaccination to Synergy right away. You do not need to book another ERV to lift your condition until after you have completed all required vaccinations.
Am I eligible for placement with a conditional pass? If you have a conditional pass on or before your NARs deadline, you qualify for placement with a conditional pass.
Synergy Appointments
What if I can’t find a Synergy ERV appointment before my deadline? If you do not see an earlier ERV date on Synergy, there are no earlier appointments available. Please book the earliest appointment available. Neither the NARs Office nor Synergy can offer earlier appointments than you can see on the scheduler. If the appointment date is after your deadline, you are still encouraged to book it. Reminder that all documents must be uploaded before 9:00am on the day of your ERV or they will not be reviewed during your ERV.
