Ben Walters, a professor in the Forestry Technician program, joined Fleming in 2016 to teach online Sustainable Trails courses. He became a full-time faculty member in 2017, teaching Forest Ecology, Forest Management Using GIS, Digital Image Interpretation and Forest Inventory. Prior to joining Fleming, Ben spent six years as Northumberland County’s Forest Manager, managing the County’s Forest Conservation By-Law and its conservation, recreational trail and silviculture programs, with particular management interests in conifer plantation conversion and rare Black Oak Woodland/Black Oak Savannah.

Ben has worked from the shores of Assateague, Virginia to Akimiski Island, Nunavut and almost everywhere in between. He is a graduate of Fleming’s Parks and Forest Recreation and Ecosystem Management Technician programs, and has a B.Sc.H. in Environmental Science and M.Sc. in Environmental and Life Sciences from Trent University with research focusing on the effects of trails and forest roads on forest breeding birds. He is currently a PhD candidate studying the relationships between forest breeding birds, snowpack, soil moisture and insects in plantations and natural forest. He strives to provide students with knowledge and skills needed to be the best stewards of our forests they can be.
