Needle Stick Injury
Sir Sandford Fleming College will follow the Ontario Hospital Association/Ontario Medical Association recommendations for post-exposure follow-up for needle stick injuries.
The purpose of this protocol is:
- • to provide direction to hospitals/College Health Services for preventing transmission of blood-borne pathogens from persons carrying on activities in the hospital to patients, or from patients to such persons;
- • to establish a system for managing potential exposures to blood-borne pathogens, especially hepatitis B virus (HBV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), among persons carrying on activities in the hospital/College Health Services.
Exposed persons and their personal physicians are responsible for follow-up care and therapy if disease occurs.
This protocol applies to all persons carrying on activities in the hospital/College Health
Services, including contract workers and housekeeping.
When accepting students, the training hospital must inform the College that the student/ school is responsible for pre-exposure hepatitis B immunization and post-exposure follow-up for their personnel.
At Sir Sandford Fleming College, all students and employees are offered and encouraged to receive Hepatitis B vaccinations. In the event of a needle stick injury, seek immediate medical treatment through the emergency department of the hospital in which you are placed (if this is where the injury occurred,) or through Campus Health Service (if the injury occurred in the College.)
No routine screening of persons carrying on activities in the hospital/College Health Services is needed for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAG) or for antibody to the HIV antibody.
Reporting Illness After Exposure
- The Health Service must inform all exposed persons of the symptoms of blood-borne diseases, and advise the injured person to report these, if they should occur, to Health Services. This information must be documented.
Whenever such symptoms are reported, the person must be referred to his/her personal physician for medical investigation and treatment.
Follow-up Procedures Post Exposure
When a person is exposed to blood of body fluids from an unknown or known source:
• allow any wound to bleed freely, and then wash it with soap and water;
• complete an Accident Report, and take it and report in person immediately to the Health Nurse (or designated alternative);
• nursing students shall report to their clinical supervisors, who, in turn, will contact the office of the Executive Director of Finance (Fleming) to report the incident. (Upon completion of an accident form, and assessment by the hospital occupational health department, the student shall report to the emergency department for medical treatment.)
• employees of the College shall complete an Accident Report and seek medical direction through College Health Services or through their personal physician.
(Human Resources must be notified immediately of the incident.)
When an exposed person is seen, the Occupational Health Nurse (or designate) will perform the following procedures:
• allow any wound to bleed freely, and then wash it with soap and water;
• complete an Accident Report.
27.00 Procedure For Clean Up of Blood Spills

5. Mats should be rinsed and then sent for cleaning.
6. If paper towels are involved with blood, be sure to put them into a plastic garbage bag and be extremely careful that the plastic bag is never punctured.
7. Water should be dumped down a sink, which should then be rinsed with clean Javex one-in-nine solution.
8. Mop head should be rinsed in clean Javex one-in-nine mixture and mop should be discarded in a green plastic garbage bag.
