While extreme heat can put everyone at risk, health risks are greatest for older adults, infants and young children, those taking certain medications or with certain conditions such as respiratory, cardiac and psychiatric conditions, and outdoor workers. During high temperature and humid days in the summer months, beat the heat and stay safe while enjoying the weather responsibly with these tips:
Stay hydrated – Ensure you are drinking throughout the day, especially if you are sweating a lot. Water is best – avoid alcoholic beverages, coffee, and cola.
Apply sunscreen – Wearing sunscreen throughout the day, especially on any exposed skin, can help prevent sun burns or more serious issues.
Schedule physical activities during cooler times – Whether you are working, exercising, or doing other physically exerting activities, schedule them for cooler times of the day when the temperatures are lower and the sun is less strong, such as early morning or in the evening.
Watch for signs of heat exhaustion – Monitor for symptoms such as headache, nausea, dizziness, weakness, cramps, thirst, irritability, and elevated body temperature. It is important to cool down to prevent more serious issues as soon as these symptoms appear.
Dress in light coloured and loose fitting clothing – Lighter coloured clothing such as white, yellow, and grey help keep the body cool by absorbing less heat. Comparatively, dark colours like black absorb more heat and could lend to higher body temperatures.
Extreme heat is often accompanied by poor air quality. Monitor the Air Quality Health Index in your location here.
