Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS)
Any student who may work with children or vulnerable adults, or potentially have unsupervised access to children or vulnerable adults in the ordinary course of placement or an education program, are required to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check.
Apply directly to your local police service with your program vulnerable sector check letter found below. Please note, if the police seal in the bottom right corner of the completed vulnerable sector screening is faint, please submit two photos to Synergy – one of the full document and one of a close up of the seal. (Photos seem to capture the seal better than a scanned document). Not sure where your local police service is? Check the Detachment Locator!
Processing timelines vary by police department. It is recommended that you reach out and inquire about the estimated processing times, and apply early to leave some buffer room in case your police service sees an increase in requests. If someone has a matching name and date of birth to you, there is a chance that you will be asked to complete fingerprints to complete your record check. This lengthens the time that it takes to complete your record check. There is no alternative to providing a completed and valid VSC for your NARS. Offence declaration forms and receipts are NOT accepted by placement sites, and will not be accepted by Synergy in lieu of your VSC. Please apply early to ensure that you receive your VSC before your deadline or before your current VSC expires.
Were you provided with a Vulnerable Sector Check that was password encrypted? If your VSC was issued to you by your local police service with password encryption, there is an extra step that you will need to complete on Synergy:
- Please create a word document including the following information:
- Your name
- Your student ID
- The password to access your VSC
- Please title this file as follows: FirstName_LastName_VSC_Password
- Example: John_Doe_VSC_Password
- Please upload this document to Synergy to the same document upload location where you have uploaded your VSC
**NOTE: For students who have addresses within the CITY OF TORONTO (postal code beginning with M) Email NARS@flemingcollege.ca for the Fleming College Police Code.
IMPORTANT: We recommend that you download your processed vulnerable sector check as the link from police services will expire!
