Meet your Sutherland Joint Health & Safety Committee Members for 2025/2026

Elane Kalavrias
Worker Co-Chair
Telecom Analyst

Health & Safety is a significant part of my role at Fleming College, as the technical lead behind the scenes working closely with Safety, I ensure that 911 services are 24×7 available, safety phones are working, panic buttons and the Emergency Notification System are in tip top shape, so participating on the committee felt like a perfect fit!  My goal is all Fleming College departmental meetings start with asking if there are any Health and Safety concerns, safety doesn’t happen by accident, it’s a choice!

COMING SOON Bianca Sclippa
Administrative Co-Chair
Operations Manager, School of Health & Wellness
Candace Gainer
Worker Member
Biotechnology Technologist

I am responsible for the everyday safe operations of our Chemistry and Biology Labs at the Sutherland campus. Health and safety is at the forefront in a laboratory setting due to the nature of unique hazards present in such an environment. Being a JHSC member allows me to apply my knowledge of health and safety to the college as a whole, while also hearing the unique perspectives of other committee members that I can bring to my work space.

Joanne Tully
Worker Member
Faculty, School of Business

Having worked in Human Resources for almost 20 years, Health and Safety was always part of my portfolio. Joining the committee is a great fit for me as it keeps me current and provides new insights for me which I can bring to my students as I teach the HRPA (Human Resources Professionals Association) approved Occupational Health and Safety course at Fleming.

Heather Cuthbert

David Vasey

I have been interested in Health and Safety my entire building career, and my six as Faculty at Fleming. My role as Carpentry and Construction Technologist gives me opportunity to work with the Joint Health and Safety Committee to work towards a safer work environment with all the Trades and Technology programs.

Sarah Mackie
Worker Member
Simulation Operations Lead

As a technologist, I joined the Joint Health and Safety Committee to help ensure our spaces are safe, functional, and supportive for both staff and students. Prior to working at Fleming, I worked in hospital and community-based rehabilitation supporting individuals who had sustained serious injuries through workplace incidents. That experience gave me a firsthand understanding of the lasting impact unsafe working conditions can have on people’s lives

Nathan Calder
Administrative Member
Supervisor, Facilities Operations

My experience in facility maintenance and operations allows me to contribute a practical, solutions-focused perspective to the Joint Health and Safety Committee when addressing concerns brought forward by the campus community. Safety is always at the forefront of the work my team performs every day while supporting operations across the College. I am committed to promoting safe practices, identifying potential risks, and ensuring that both my team and the broader community are supported in maintaining a healthy and safe workplace.

  Cameron Desormeaux
Administrative Member
In-House Campus Security Guard, Facilities Services & Support

I chose to join the CMT as an opportunity to expand my knowledge and build upon my training as a Campus Security Guard. I felt greatly honoured to represent my team at Sutherland Campus within this opportunity. I feel I am a good fit for the CMT because I understand the importance of safety in the workplace, and the importance of adhering and following policies and procedures put in place to protect both employers and employees.

Marc Patenaude
Administrative Member
Operations Manager, SENRS

Given my background in the natural resources industry, I have experience on both the positive side of safety improvement and the negative effects of incident outcomes on everyone involved and in the community.  For me, safety is about returning home at the end of the day and spending time with family.  It’s about continually improving safety and always setting a higher standard.
