What career options will be most satisfying for you when you graduate, and as you grow in your career?  With so many possibilities, it can be hard to sort through all the advice that is out there.  Career Services can help you find your best “career fit” by helping you explore your own personality, interests, values and strengths.

To explore your interests, abilities, work preferences, multiple intelligences, learning styles and work values, visit Career Planning Quizzes from the Canada Job Bank. Each quiz takes less than 10 minutes to complete, and you will receive results for each quiz taken. Take more than one and you will be able to see all your results in a profile which you can use to research job possibilities. Save your profile and discuss your results with one of our Career Educators.

Personality
Try the Typefinder Personality Test to uncover your personality type.  This assessment is widely used in career and workplace settings around the world and is based on the Myer’s Briggs Personality Assessment.  A helpful tool for those interested in uncovering their personal and career strengths, and those seeking to clarify which careers will be most satisfying for them. The Typefinder Personality Test is free to take.  After you have received your results, get a full description of your type using the Truity Personality Blog.  At the top of the page, select “What’s your Type?” then look under “Myers Briggs” and select your four-letter code test result.

Interests
What will you find most rewarding in a career? Take the Career Aptitude Test to learn which careers will best suit your interests and strengths.  Based on the Holland’s Codes and Big Five models, this free assessment will provide you with a clear understanding of how your interests line up with different careers.

Now that you have explored your options, it’s time to create your personalized plan – it’s time to act!

There are many ways to set goals or plans. The important message here is that you are far more likely to succeed when you are intentional about it. You can follow goal setting or decision-making methods, but finding what works for you is best. Here are some things to keep in mind to get you started:

  • Clearly identify a goal or target.
  • Plan steps or actions to take that move you closer to the goal.
  • If it’s a big goal or may take a significant amount of time, break it into smaller goals.
  • Prioritize steps.
  • Re-evaluate often and adjust when needed.
  • Set realistic deadlines.
  • Consult with career services.

Create Your Future: Get the Word Out and Build Your Brand

Now is the time to put your plan into action! Taking all the knowledge you have gained about yourself, your career, and the labour market, it’s time to create your personal brand and prepare your job search.  

  • Ensure your cover letters and resumes are updated and effective
  • Practice interview skills to help you increase your chances of landing your desired job.
  • Use social media appropriately and take advantage of LinkedIn to build your professional brand 
  • Identify potential obstacles and solutions. 
  • Create a support system of friends, family, colleagues, and faculty. 
  • Gain skills and experience in your field through volunteer, internship, co-op, and placement opportunities. 
  • Investigate opportunities in your program or look at community opportunities to build your brand in your industry.
