If you study permit has expired and you did not apply for an extension before it expired, you are out of status and need to stop studying immediately. If you are working or on placement, you also need to stop working immediately.
You are able to restore your status as a student within 90 (ninety) days of the date of expiration. During this grace period, you are allowed to stay in the country. Once a decision is made and is positive, you can resume your studies.
If your spouse, common-law partner or dependent children came with you to Canada, they may also need to restore their status.
If you wish to obtain a new study permit and restore your temporary resident status, you must:
- submit your application within 90 days of losing your status:
- write a letter explaining all of the facts and circumstances that prevented you from complying with the conditions of your permit;
- keep meeting the requirements for your stay;
- remain in Canada while your application is being processed;
- meet all the remaining conditions listed on your permit, and
- pay your fees
- for a new study permit ($379)
- restoration ($229) and
- study permit ($150)
- for a new study permit ($379)
Restoration applies to each family member who has lost their status. There is no guarantee that IRCC will approve your application.

HOW TO RESTORE YOUR STATUS AS A STUDENT
Follow the instructions and tutorials to extend your study permit posted at Study Permit Extension | International Student Services (flemingcollege.ca)
- Complete the form IMM 5709 – APPLICATION TO CHANGE CONDITIONS, EXTEND MY STAY OR REMAIN IN CANADA AS A STUDENT (You will be able to download this form once you complete the questionnaire within your application)
- Under section 3, Make sure to check both “Apply for a study permit for the first time or extend my study permit” and “Restore my status as a student” under Question 3.
- If you are going on placement, you will need to restore your co-op work permit as well. Make sure to indicate it under DETAILS OF INTENDED STUDY IN CANADA, section 6 by selecting “YES” in a) and “Co-op Work Permit” from the drop-down arrow in b).
