New to Canada? Start Here

Welcome to Canada!
Beginning your journey in a new country—and an unfamiliar city—can feel daunting, but don’t worry! We’re here to support you every step of the way.

Here are some key things to help you settle in:

Right After You Arrive

  • At the airport: Make sure to safely store the documents issued by the CBSA Officer (such as your Study Permit/Co-Op Work Permit). Keep your passport in your hand luggage and double-check that you haven’t left anything behind.
  • Secure housing: If you haven’t arranged permanent housing yet, make sure you have a short-term option. We offer a short-term 3-day stay at local motels, which you can book through the iCent App. Have questions about the short-term stays ? E-mail us at international@flemingcollege.ca. Looking for long-term housing? Visit our Off-Campus Housing Website to learn more.
  • Connect with us!
Drop by the International Office and say hello! We usually have lots of fun orientation events and activities planned to help you meet others and feel at home.

Things to Set Up

  • Get your Social Insurance Number (SIN):
If you couldn’t get your SIN at the airport, don’t worry! Service Canada usually visits campus. You can book an appointment at the Sutherland Campus to get it done later.
  • ⚠️ IMPORTANT: If you have a shuttle booked, do not miss your shuttle just to get your SIN. You can get it later on campus/at the Service Canada locations.
  • Set up your bank account:
Book an appointment with the bank of your choice to open an account. You’ll need it for tuition payments, rent, and everyday purchases.
  • Get your phone plan:
Shop around for a mobile phone plan that fits your needs. If you need a new phone, some providers offer bundle options where you can combine your device and plan into one bill.
  • Log into MyCampus and check your Fleming email:
Many important updates—including information about classes, your bus pass, and orientation—will be sent to your Fleming email, so make it a habit to check it regularly.

Navigating Your Campus Community

  • Transportation:
If you’re studying at the Sutherland (Peterborough) Campus, your tuition includes a bus pass. Instructions on how to download and use your pass will be sent to your Fleming email. If you are studying at the Frost (Lindsay) Campus – please visit the Lindsay Transit Website.
  • Groceries:
Find the nearest grocery stores to your home. You’ll also find local stores that carry international food items and ingredients to make you feel closer to home.
  • Check the weather daily:
Canada has four distinct seasons. It’s a good habit to check the weather app on your phone each morning before heading out.

It’s okay to feel a bit of culture shock—give yourself grace and time. We’re here for you, so if you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to come talk to us. You’ve got this!
