Tax Guide for International Students

NEW:  Recording of Tax Information Session for International Students – March 6, 2024

Filing Your Taxes

Every year residents of Canada must file their taxes with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

It is FREE to file and most international students actually receive a REFUND shortly after they submit!

Canadian Tax Year

A tax year is the same as a calendar year (January 1st to December 31st), and the deadline to file your taxes is April 30th of the following year.

Example: January 1 2023 to December 31st 2023 taxes needs to be filed by April 30th 2024.

T2202A Tuition Tax Forms

Your Tuition T2202A can be found on your secure Student Centre on the left-hand side under the Student Resources tab.

T2202A Tuition Tax forms are issued for tuition CHARGED that is charged to your student account, not for when tuition PAID into you student account. For example: if you are a January start student and paid your fees in December before you came to Canada. Your student account with Fleming College is not charged until January therefore you would receive a tax form for the calendar year that started in January, not the previous calendar year when you paid your tuition fees.

Four documents to prepare for filing your taxes:

  1. Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  2. Income Tax Slips such as T4 or T4A (for scholarships, awards, bursaries etc.)
  3. Tuition T2202A form (which can be found on your secure Student Centre on the left-hand side under the Student Resources tab)
  4. Rent receipts from your landlord if you live off campus.
    1. If you live on Residence, visit the Fleming College Student Tax Form webpage: https://flemingcollege.ca/admissions/student-tax-forms

Note: There could be other documents that you need to file given your unique circumstances (for example: Textbook receipts). This is not an exhaustive list

Deadline to File

A tax year is the same as a calendar year (January 1st to December 31st), and the deadline to file your taxes is April 30th of the following year.  If you do not file your taxes by April 30th, you can still file your tax late. However, there could be an interest charge and late penalty if you owe the government taxes.
