Transfer Credits

What is a Transfer Credit?
Transfer credits are granted for courses completed at another recognized post-secondary institution that are determined to be equivalent to a course at Fleming. This allows you to avoid repeating similar coursework.

Transfer credit assessment is a free service available to current full-time and part-time students, as well as former students who require credits to meet graduation requirements.

To apply for transfer credit, you must have accepted your offer and have access to your Student Portal.

If you have completed a similar course and achieved a passing grade that meets the minimum requirement of the equivalent Fleming course, you may be eligible to apply for transfer credit.

If your Transfer Credit Request is successful, you will not be required to take the Fleming course and a grade of “EX” (Exemption) will be assigned. Courses with a grade of “EX” are not included in the calculation of your GPA.

Your application, along with your official transcript and course outline, must be submitted no later than the course drop deadline to avoid receiving a “W” (withdrawal) on your transcript. Students must remain enrolled and continue attending classes until a final decision has been made.

How do I apply?
Once you have access to your Student Portal, you can submit a Transfer Credit Request using the following navigation:

Student Portal > Student Center > Self-Service Options (right-hand side) > Transfer Credit Request > Add a New Value

Students are encouraged to submit their application at least 15 business days before the start of the term. Requests submitted later may not be processed prior to the College’s add/drop deadline.

Students must remain enrolled and continue attending classes until final approval is given.

How do I find if my Transfer Credit has been accepted?
To check the status of your request:

Student Portal > Student Center > Self-Service Options > Transfer Credit Request > Find Existing

Select the request you would like to view.

  • The main page will show the current status (e.g., “In Review”)
  • To view the final decision, check the Comments section
  • Any additional required actions (e.g., updated transcript) will also be noted there

Once your application has been processed, you will receive an email notification.

Results can also be viewed in your Transfer Credit Report in your Student Portal.

Who do I contact?
For transfer credit questions, contact the Transfer Credit Coordinator in the Registrar’s Office: TransferCredit@flemingcollege.ca.

GNED’s – What you need to know
General Education Electives (GNEDs) must meet specific Ministry requirements to ensure students receive a well-rounded education.

Courses must fall under one of the following themes:

  • Arts in Society
  • Civic Life
  • Social and Cultural Understanding
  • Personal Understanding
  • Science and Technology

These courses focus more on theory than applied learning.

University-level courses that align with these themes may also be considered for General Education transfer credit.

If you have a course that you think is eligible for a General Education transfer credit but aren’t sure, please don’t hesitate to contact the Transfer Credit Coordinator (TransferCredit@flemingcollege.ca). Be sure to have your course outline available.

PLAR (Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition)
PLAR differs from transfer credit in that it evaluates non-traditional learning, such as work experience or independent learning.

For more information on PLAR, please visit the PLAR website.

FAQ’s
Can I find out how many transfer credits I will receive before I enroll in a Fleming program?
Transfer credit evaluations are only processed after you have accepted your offer and become a Fleming student.

If I drop courses because I have been granted Transfer Credit and my status changes to Part-time, what does this mean?
A change to part-time status may affect your ability to progress to the next semester. Check with your Records Specialist to confirm how many courses are required to maintain full-time status.

If I drop a course because I have been granted Transfer Credit, will this affect my OSAP funding?
It may. Check with the Financial Aid Office to determine whether your remaining course load affects your eligibility for OSAP assistance.

Is there a limit to how much credit I can transfer?
Yes. Fleming has a minimum residency requirement of 25%, meaning at least 25% of your program courses must be completed at Fleming.

Can I submit a transfer credit request before I accept my offer?
No. Transfer credit requests can only be submitted after you have accepted your offer and have access to your Student Portal. You may review previously approved equivalencies using the Transfer Credit Search Tool before becoming a student.

Do I need to send official transcripts even if my course has already been evaluated?
Yes. Even if a course has been previously approved for transfer credit, you must still submit an official transcript and a Transfer Credit Request to have the credit applied to your record.

Can I submit a transfer credit request for a course I am currently taking?
You may submit a request, but it cannot be assessed until your final grade is available on an official transcript.

What happens if my transfer credit is approved after the add/drop deadline?
If your transfer credit is approved after the add/drop deadline, you may need to work with the Registrar’s Office to determine next steps, which could include a course withdrawal or other adjustments depending on timing.

Can a transfer credit request be re-evaluated?
Yes. If you have additional documentation to support your request, you may request a re-evaluation within 30 calendar days of the original decision by contacting the Registrar’s Office.

Do transfer credits expire or have a time limit?
In some cases, courses may not be eligible for transfer credit if they are no longer considered current. This is determined during the academic review process based on the subject area and program requirements. As a general guideline, courses completed more than five years ago may not be considered current, although exceptions may apply depending on the course and program.

Who reviews transfer credit requests?
Transfer credit requests are reviewed by the appropriate academic area or subject matter expert, who assesses equivalency based on course content, learning outcomes, and contact hours.
