Working

Q: When can I start working in Canada?
You can start working in Canada on your first day of classes, as long as you meet the requirements to work.
Q: How many hours can I work per week as a full-time student?
20 hours per week.
Q: How many hours can I work per week as a part-time student?
Zero (0) hours per week.
The exception to this rule is that you are only studying part-time because:
- You’re in the last semester of your study program and you don’t need a full-time course load to complete your program AND
- You were a full-time student in your program up until your last semester.
Q: Can I work on campus and off campus at the same time?

Taking a break from your studies
Q: Can I work full-time between completing my first program and starting my second program?
Yes, as long as you meet ALL of the following requirements:
- You were already able to work off-campus during your previous studies
- You have the remarks on your study permit that you are authorized to work on or off campus
- You have a valid study permit OR you applied to extend your study permit before it expired
- You received written confirmation from your current school that you completed your program (i.e., Completion Letter)
- You received a letter of acceptance to a new full-time study program at a DLI
- You’ll start your new program within 150 calendar days of receiving the confirmation that you completed your previous program

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
Q: What documents do I need for my PGWP?

Q: Can I take a post-graduate program and an Ontario college certificate program, and still be PGWP eligible?
Yes! As long as you are PGWP eligible and the programs that you complete are PGWP eligible AND they are completed with a gap of no more than 150 days between the two programs, you can submit both completion letters in your PGWP application.

Scheduled Breaks
Q: When is my scheduled break?
Please reach out to your program coordinator to ask if you have a scheduled break and if so, when.
Q: How many hours can I work on a scheduled break (reading week, summer break and in between semesters)?
If you meet the criteria to be able to work while studying AND you are a full-time student before AND after the scheduled break, you can work full-time during the scheduled break.

Q: Can I study during my scheduled break?
Yes, and you can study and work full-time at the same time during your scheduled break.
Q: Where can I find a college-issued break letter?
Fleming College (i.e., the international student services department, the records department, and our program coordinators) do not issue official letters to students when taking authorized or unauthorized breaks. The only authorized breaks are your reading weeks and breaks in between semesters that your whole class/cohort takes as well.
Co-op/Placement/Clinicals
*All international students who have a co-op, placement or clinical as part of their program, must have a Co-op Work Permit to go on placement.
Q: I need a Co-op Work Permit, how do I apply for one?

Q: How many hours can I work while also completing my co-op?
Co-op hours are completed under your co-op work permit. Working off-campus falls under your study permit. You can work up to 20 hours a week under your study permit PLUS your co-op hours at the same time as long as you are a registered full-time student.
Q: Can I take a paid co-op?
Yes. Your co-op can be paid or unpaid.

Q: Do I get a physical copy of my Health Card?
No, but you can download the online copy from your phone, laptop, or desktop.
