New Grade Change Request Form

New Grade Change Request Form has the Deans signature line taken off.

Numbers of changes dropped 39% after previous form and approvals were implemented. The timelines of grades entered impacts probation, Financial Aid distribution and grad audits. We hope numbers of changes do not rise.

Fall Course Shells are ready for Instructor access

This message is sent on behalf of the Learning Design and Support Team

The course shells in D2L are ready for faculty access.

Faculty are encouraged to get their courses ready prior to the semester in the following ways:

  • Copy course content into your Fall 2018 course shells using these instructions. If you are NOTable to copy content into your course, you can request the content be rolled over by sending an email to LDSTeam@flemingcollege.ca
  • Add the link to the approved course outline (instructions)
  • Edit and/or update course materials including release dates for content and assessments (instructions)
  • Add a welcome message via the News tool to your course page (instructions– go to item #5 for how to use the news tool in your courses)
  • Create attendance records (instructions)
  • Check out the Virtual Classroom! Allows you to host an interactive session/class remotely (with presentation, whiteboard, chat, video and audio), host virtual office hours OR host facilitated discussions, text/assignment prep. Check out the details! (instructions)

All D2L help and tip sheets are located right on the D2L homepage.

If you’re logging in to D2L for the first time or for the first time in a while, you might notice what appear to be some significant changes. Don’t panic! This is an update that is almost exclusively cosmetic. The functionality of D2L and the tools we use remain intact.

The most pressing issue is that you might not see any courses listed when your first login. Don’t panic! All you need to do is “pin” the courses that you access most often. To do this, simply click “View All Courses” and then search by name and/or course number. To pin, hover over the top right-hand corner of the course tile, single click on the three white dots, and then click “pin.” Now that it’s pinned, it will be there at the top whenever you login.

Have a great semester!

Message from Judith Limkilde, VP-Academic about Office Spaces and student-faculty meeting spaces

**The following message is sent on behalf of Judith Limkilde, Vice-President Academic**

Hello,

As we approach the start of the fall semester, I would like to update you on our Sutherland Campus A-Wing renovation project and specifically the impact on teaching and office spaces  during the transition.

Significant progress has been made on the construction of the A-Wing and the various moves required for both swing space during the project and permanent space changes. Our Physical Resources team and contractors have been working at full capacity all summer. Similarly our Academic Operations and Registrar’s Office have been working to find the best solutions possible for scheduling and timetables.

As you know, portable classrooms are now in place. They will be visibly numbered with a scheme coinciding with student timetables. Walkways and ramps have been installed to ensure full accessibility. Teams are working to have them equipped with the necessary furniture, wiring, lighting and IT required for a fully functional learning space. While walkways and signage will be in place, we also recognize that it may take additional time, particularly at the start of the semester, for student and faculty to find and travel to the portables. It’s not ideal to be using portables, however, we ask for your cooperation and patience as they are a necessary resource during the transition to the new space.

Concerns have been expressed about available space for faculty-student interaction and student study areas. We have been working hard over the summer to address these concerns:

  • A new room booking service is now available through Physical Resources https://department.flemingcollege.ca/facilities/sutherland-campus-2/sutherland-room-bookings/  More information on this will be coming from Physical Resources shortly.
  • A select number of rooms are being kept offline (not bookable), set aside for faculty student meetings. This list will be posted on the Physical Resource site shortly.
  • This list includes the study rooms in D1129 which are now clear and available for student use or student/faculty meetings.

On occasion the need for privacy may occur unexpectedly and will not allow for advance booking (e.g.: if a student comes to see you to discuss something of a personal nature and becomes upset)

Should this occur, below are offices that can be evacuated on short notice:

Communications have been sent to students and we have been posting information on the college website and social media channels. We will continue to provide updates frequently throughout the academic year.

As previously mentioned, we will be holding a meeting on Monday, August 28th from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. in the Whetung Theatre to present information and answer questions.

Physical Resources will also be conducting tours through the new space next week. They will also have samples of the new office furniture and finishes available for preview. Watch for details in a separate note.

We recognize that these moves are stressful. We are listening and doing what we can to mitigate any disruption and inconvenience for faculty and students over the next two semesters. It’s also important to keep the long term in mind. At this time next year we will have fantastic new classrooms, labs, study spaces and offices.

Sincerely,

Judith
