Inclusion for disabled students at Fleming is rooted in both the values we hold at Fleming and the laws of our province and country.

Fleming College is committed to providing a safe and effective learning environment for all students.

Fleming is also committed to improving the accessibility of the learning environment by preventing, and eliminating barriers for students with disabilities. This helps meet our commitments to accessibility as outlined in the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and our ethical commitments. The accommodation process is an opportunity to find solutions that:

  • respect the student’s dignity
  • supports the student’s independence
  • ensures equal opportunity
  • do not comprise the learning outcomes of the course.

The accommodation process is a discussion between the student and the counsellor to find reasonable and respectful solutions and work together to implement those solutions.

This is done within the context of the college’s Access and Accommodation for Students with Disabilities policy, the Ontario Human Rights Code, and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, all of which say that disabled students have the right to access accommodations.

It is important to emphasize that academic accommodations do not change the learning outcomes in any way. They are individualized solutions.
