Absences

Work-Related Accidents or Illness

All workers are covered under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), operating under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

To report any work-related accident, illness, exposure, or incident, please complete the Accident Report Form.

Employee First Aid Room:

Location in Room C1 203.4 at Sutherland Campus.

This room provides a quiet space for employees who are not feeling well and need to lay down or recline.  This room is also used to support employees who are participating in a Return to Work Plan.


Absence Due to Illness or Injury

Short-Term Disability (STD) provides paid sick leave for up to 130 days in a plan year for full-time employees who are absent due to illness or injury.

After this period, eligible employees may apply for Long-Term Disability (LTD) benefits.  The LTD elimination period is 130 consecutive working days of illness or injury.  See your appropriate benefits booklet for more details.

Pay During Sick Leave:

      • 100% sick pay for days covered by your sick leave bank
      • 75% sick pay for additional days, up to 130 days in the plan year

Sick Leave Annual Entitlements:

Employee Group Effective Date* Annual Entitlement Notes
Academic September 1 20 No limit to carry forward days
Administrative September 1 130 Cannot carry forward days
Support Staff September 1 10 Can carry forward up to 120 days
*To receive entitlement on this date, employees must be active on the effective date

Medical Certificates:

Medical certificates are generally required after an absence of 5 or more consecutive days; however, the College may request medical evidence in all circumstances.

Reporting Absences to Human Resources:

Absences of 5 consecutive days or longer must be reported immediately to Human Resources by the supervisor.  For more details, see Fleming’s Absence Due to Illness Procedure.
