As part of the overall student experience, Fleming College provides paid employment opportunities to its students; funded by the College OR paid for by the associated department.
To learn more about the Colleges student employment wage subsidy programs please read section 6 of the ‘Manager Guide to Student Hiring’, which you can download from the link below under ‘Resources’.
In an effort to support students in obtaining employment experience, managers are encouraged to budget for student workers each fiscal year and not rely solely on the College funded programs.
Student Wage Rates:
- Effective October 1, 2023, minimum wage increased to $16.55 per hour.
- Effective October 1, 2024, minimum wage increases to $17.20 per hour.

The Student Hiring Process:
Step 1: Review the Established Job Descriptions and identify the position you are hiring for.
Step 2: Complete the On Campus Student Hiring Request Form (2024) and email completed form to the HR & Talent Officer (HRTO). They will review requests to ensure they are completed accurately. Once compiled the HRTO send copies to the Registrars Office (for SEP and FWSP) or International Student Services (for ISEP and IWSP) if funding is requested.
Step 3: RO and ISS will review the hiring requests and distribute funding as per their protocol and notify the HRTO.
Step 4: The Hiring Manager will receive a notification from the HRTO if their position is eligible for funding.
Step 5: The Hiring Manager can determine if it is suitable to proceed to posting the opportunity. For efficiency purposes if you have multiple vacancies please combine into 1 posting, where appropriate.
Step 6: The Hiring Manager will prepare and review posting details and provide the posting to the HRTO.
Step 7: Once posted, students can apply online through MyCampus and the Hiring Manager can review applications in Evolve.
Step 8: Once the posting closes, the Hiring Manager will review resumes and make selections. The Hiring Manager will request the student(s) complete a Fleming Funding Application Form and submit to the HRTO for review. The Hiring Manager will complete interviews.
Step 9: Once a successful student has been selected the appointment letter should be produced. Please make the HRTO aware of your final candidate.

Full-time Summer Student (App G) Appointment Letter Template:
Complete the App G Appointment Letter Request Form – March 2024 and submit to Human Resources produces full-time appointment letters and a copy will be provided to the manager to distribute to the student worker for signature. FT Students are entitled to join join the CAAT Pension Plan, under its DBplus design (Appendix G of the Plan Text). Please note, enrolment in the CAAT Pension Plan is optional and if interested students can register online here: Enroll – CAAT Pension Plan
Step 10: Hiring Manager must submit signed appointment letter and new hire paperwork to Human Resources a minimum of one week prior to the student’s start date.
New Hire Paperwork can be downloaded from the Payroll tab (see Employee Onboarding and other HR Forms) and should include the following:
– Employee Personal Data Form
– TD1 and TDION Tax Forms
Note: HR must receive all documentation at least five business days before a student’s start date. New hire paperwork is only required if the student has not been previously employed by the College or has had a break in employment lasting longer than 6 month
Step 11: Arrange for account and system access by contacting IT
Depending on the system access required, students may require an account that is separate from their regular student account. Contact – Information Technology Services
Step 12: Inform the student worker that they must complete mandatory training
